TorBox Free Plan With Stremio: What Works, What Doesn't

Published Last updated Reviewed November 2026

The TorBox free plan can be linked to a Stremio-style media app, but it runs out of room quickly. You get 1 active slot, 10 downloads per month, 10GB per download, no seeding and no web downloads. That is enough to test the setup with a few files of your own. It is not enough for regular use. A paid plan removes the squeeze, and the cheapest is $3 per month at list price.

This post covers lawful use only: your own media library, public domain films and audio, openly licensed work, Linux images and other files you have the right to use. TorBox does not supply content, and neither do we. Respect copyright where you live.

How a media app fits in

Stremio is a media player and library app. It is extended through addons, and some addons can use a TorBox account through your API key. TorBox does the downloading and storage in the cloud, and the app plays from there instead of from your home connection. The Stremio guide covers the setup and the security side. We do not name specific addons, because they change and are not made by TorBox.

Good lawful sources to test with:

  • Home videos and recordings you made yourself.
  • Public domain works, such as old silent films and public domain music.
  • Open media released under free licences, for example the shorts from the Blender Foundation.
  • Linux distribution images you download and keep.

Where the free plan stops

  • 1 slot. One active download at a time. TorBox’s help center says extra downloads are queued until a slot frees up. Cached items do not use a slot, but a fresh download does.
  • 10 downloads a month. Each new item you add to the account counts. If you test several apps in one evening, you can use the allowance up quickly.
  • 10GB per download. Disk images, archives and long high-bitrate recordings can pass 10GB, and TorBox will refuse those on the free tier.
  • No seeding. If your use depends on keeping a torrent active, free will not do.
  • Inactive downloads are removed. TorBox deletes downloads that show no progress for 2 days.

None of that is bad for a free tier. It is a trial-sized allowance.

A realistic test plan for the free tier

  1. Create the account and copy your API key into the app (see how to keep the key safe).
  2. Add one small file you own and play it. That proves the key, the app and the playback path.
  3. Add a second file while the first is still downloading. You will see the single slot at work.
  4. Count your downloads. By the time you reach 10 in a month you know whether the allowance fits you.

If step 3 annoys you, you have your answer about slots.

Which paid plan for a media-app setup

  • Essential, $3 per month list. 3 slots, 200GB per download, 1Gbps, 24 hour seeding, 300GB storage. Fine for one person.
  • Standard, $5 per month list. 5 slots, 200GB per download, 14 day seeding, 500GB. A comfortable fit for a household or a larger library.
  • Pro, $10 per month list. 10 slots, 1TB per download, 30 day seeding, 1TB storage, unlimited RSS and Usenet. For heavy use.

3, 6 and 12 month prices are shown after login, so check the checkout for the current price. The pricing page has the full table, and the free vs paid comparison explains what changes when you upgrade.

The honest recommendation

Create a free account and link it with a few files you have the right to use. If the workflow suits you, go paid. The free plan teaches you the workflow, but regular use hits the slot and monthly download caps fast.

When you upgrade, open our link before your first purchase. It adds 7 extra days per month purchased to your plan. For a 12 month purchase that is 84 days. Be logged in, confirm the popup, and only then pay. If no popup appears, do not buy. The free trial page explains how the 24 hour trial differs.

Frequently asked questions

Does the TorBox free plan work with Stremio?

A TorBox account can be linked to apps that support it, but the free plan has 1 slot, 10 downloads per month and no seeding, so it suits only very light use.

Does TorBox provide content for Stremio?

No. TorBox is a download and storage service. You bring your own lawful files, such as your own media, public domain works or Linux ISOs.

Which paid plan suits a Stremio-style setup?

For a household, Standard has 5 slots and 500GB storage. Essential is the cheapest paid tier with 3 slots. Pro is for heavy use.

Can I try paid features before paying?

TorBox offers a 24 hour trial of the Pro plan to free accounts. The trial does not count towards the bonus days.
